Abstract

This study examines the psychological mechanisms by which grading and assessment shape students’ learning motivation, focusing in particular on intrinsic and extrinsic motivational processes. Through an extensive review of current literature and an analysis of contemporary practices within the Azerbaijani education system, the dual role of assessment is highlighted - as both a catalyst for engagement and a potential source of anxiety and disengagement. Drawing on core theories such as Self-Determination Theory, Mindset Theory, and Attribution Theory, the study explores how formative and summative assessment practices impact academic behaviors, emotional well-being, and long-term educational goals. Findings indicate that while externally driven motivation triggered by grades can yield short-term performance boosts, intrinsic motivation - nurtured through constructive feedback, fair assessment, and supportive learning environments - has a more sustainable impact on learners. In the Azerbaijani context, where traditional grading remains predominant, pilot studies suggest that psychologically informed formative assessment strategies show promising results. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for designing assessment systems that foster autonomy, competence, and relatedness among students.
