Visualising for Better Understanding: The Contribution of Mind Maps to Teaching Didactics to Adult Learners

Abstract

In an educational context marked by growing challenges in adult teaching, pedagogical pressures often hinder understanding and knowledge retention, as is the case at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, where students often encounter difficulties in organising ideas, stimulating reflection, and connecting concepts effectively, resulting in insufficient preparation of learners. Given this observation, it is essential to use innovative teaching methods that make learning more interactive, structured, and accessible. That said, mind maps, also known as heuristic maps, allow information to be represented in a tree-like, hierarchical manner to reinforce understanding.

The study we propose is part of an experimental approach conducted with learners training at the ENS. A section of the course on the module “Classroom management tools and techniques” was used as a basis for analysis, first presented traditionally and then using a mind map constructed collectively. A comparison of the two groups' outputs enabled evaluation of the impact of this visual approach.
