Intricacies and Dynamics of Social Security Programs and Development Administration in Nigeria

Nigeria faces persistent social security challenges, with over 80% of workers in the informal economy lacking formal protection. In Taraba State, where developmental constraints intersect with rising insecurity, the effectiveness of social security programs remains largely understudied. This study, therefore, examines the effectiveness of social security programs (SSPs) in Taraba State, focusing on four interrelated dimensions—public awareness, coverage gaps, socioeconomic outcomes, and the role of SSPs in enhancing security stability. Guided by Systems Theory, a cross-sectional survey design was employed to gather data from 195 respondents, comprising 60 retirees, 80 informal-sector workers, and 55 aged citizens. Data were collected through structured online questionnaires administered over 14 days. Instrument reliability was confirmed using Cronbach’s Alpha, with coefficients ranging from 0.76 to 0.82 across core constructs, indicating acceptable internal consistency. The study concludes that low awareness, administrative inefficiencies, and limited inclusion undermine the effectiveness of SSPs in Taraba State. It recommends expanding digital inclusion strategies, strengthening institutional transparency, and extending coverage to informal workers and vulnerable groups. The findings contribute to evidence-based policymaking and provide a framework for improving the delivery of social protection at the subnational level in Nigeria.
